Git Intro & Setup

Tutorial: try.github.com

GIT is simply a snapshot of your software folder+file structure.  Technically, it is a version control software for decentralized source code management.  Best of all, it's free and open source.
  • Software consists of files in a series of folders.
  • Git sits in the top folder recording/indexing everything that happens to the files and folders.  This includes changes, updates, removals as well as which developer did what when.
  • Basically, Git is the scribe for a meeting: noting everything that happens to the code.

Git can be intimidating at first because of its array of new vocabulary.  Git can track changes of your software directory, create local packaged code backups, send a code package to the cloud (aka, upload code changes/additions as well as incremental versions).

  • Work Directory = folder where software code sits
    • add = adds changes to code waiting list
    • commit = adds changes to the local code package
  • Repository = repo = Packaged storage for Code
    • push = sends local code package to online code package
    • fork = fetch = pull = downloads online code package to one of your own folders

  1. Files = Your Code
  2. Folders = Your organization of your code
  3. Git = Local Code Repository (Package)
    • Manages local versions of folder and file changes
    • Can backup to remote (or online) code repository
  4. GitHub or BitBucket = Remote (Online) Code Repository

  1. Sign Up for GitHub or BitBucket

  1. Download Git for Command Line
  2. Download Git GUI:  for Mac | for Windows
  3. Terminal for Mac or Git Bash for Windows
    • git config --global user.name "Your Name Here"
    • git config --global user.email "your_email@youremail.com"

Remote Repository
  1. Github.com/new
  2. Create a new repo (online remote repository)

Local Repository
Terminal for Mac or Git Bash for Windows
  1. Navigate to the top folder of the software project:  cd folder
  2. git init
  3. git add -A
    • -A means all files
  4. git commit -m "first commit"
    • -m means message
  5. git remote add origin https://github.com/username/project.git
  6. git push -u origin master
    • -u means upstream... aka: push upstream to origin from master

Windows Git GUI
  1. +add
  2. Select name & directory
  3. Check “Push to GitHub.com”

Mac Git GUI
  1. File > Create New Repository
  2. Select name & directory
  3. Check “Push to GitHub.com”

Shortcut for Snipping Tool in Windows

Snipping Tool = Windows screen capture/screenshot tool to take region captures or full screenshots
This tool is an analogous alternative to OneNote's Screen Clipping Tool (Windows + S).

1.  Start
2. Search "Snipping Tool"
3. Right click on Snipping Tool
4.  Properties

5.  Click in the Shortcut key box & Hit the desired Shortcut (I chose "Ctrl+Alt+S" because it is similar to OneNote's shortcut)

NOTE: The snipping tool isn't active on every version of Vista. To turn it on, you’ll have to go to “Turn Windows features on or off” in Control Panel, and check the box for the Tablet PC utilities.

Archive Trane Trace File

Trace 700: used to create whole building load calculations

  1. Close Trace (NOTE:  there is no option to archive a Trace file while a .TRC file is open)
  2. Open the Trace 700 Program (not the file)
    • "Archive an Existing Project"
    • OR File > "Archive Project..."
  3. File.TAF is created
  4. Use the .TAF file to backup or email all of the disconnected components of a typical .TRC file
Trace uses an Adaptive Server Anywhere SQL Database Engine, which separates the typical Trace components into separate files.  This the reason why Trace files have to be run locally (as opposed to a network drive) and why .TRC files cannot be sent via email, etc. by itself.

Combining Text from Different Cells (Excel or Google Spreadsheets)

Technique 1: Using the & (Ampersand)

The & symbol consolidates text information in the same way as the + symbol adds numbers. The space between quotation marks adds a blank character between the separated texts.

To combine text with the &:

1. In cell A1, enter the text F1.
2. In cell A2, enter the text Get the Most out of Excel!
3. In cell A3, enter the text The Ultimate Excel Tip Help Guide.
4. In cell A5, type the formula:
=A1&" "&A2&" "&A3

Technique 2: Using the Concatenate Formula
The Concatenate formula allows one to combine text from multiple cells into a single cell.

To combine text use the Concatenate formula:
The Concatenate formula is in the Text category in the Insert Function dialog box. To add a blank character between words, press Spacebar in the second and fourth argument box.
