Google Gears

Online Applications -> Offline

Gears is a plug-in that extends your browser to create a richer platform for web applications. For example, webmasters can use Gears on their websites to let users access information offline or provide you with content based on your geographical location. To install Gears, visit

Gears of War

The new Google product that could augur the death of Microsoft.

"technologies like Gears render the operating system largely irrelevant. "
"If productivity applications migrate to the browser, you could choose whatever OS you pleased—your apps would work anywhere and everywhere."

Then there are companies like Automattic. Automattic is built around WordPress, an open source project that I happen to be quite interested in, since a decent portion of Xavisys’s work is done on WordPress. They run, but have diversified their income, making money from upgrades, VIP hosting, ads, Akismet licensing, and enterprise services.

Edit Google Sites Search Box

Search options

If you enter a term in the Google Sites search box, you can search across all the site's content and attachments. In addition, Google Sites offers multiple search options:

  • Search across multiple sites (not just the current site). For example, a team site might configure the search box to search its own site as well as related team sites to increase the relevant content searched.
  • Search across the entire domain. An intranet site might change the search box to search across all sites in the domain.
  • Search using a Custom Search Engine. A wiki site, for instance, might offer an option for a particular topic to search using a Custom Search Engine which includes third- party sites on the same topic.
  • Search using a Google Search Appliance. For example, an intranet site might power the search box with a Google Search Appliance which also crawls additional applications behind the firewall.
    * To configure this, just copy and paste the URL from a results page from your Google Search Appliance; Google Sites will extract the necessary configuration options from the URL.

If there is just one provider enabled, the site displays the search button only. If there are multiple providers, a drop-down list appears, so people who visit your site can select what type of search they want to do.

To enable search options for your site, follow these steps:

  1. From the More actions menu, select Manage site.
  2. Click Site layout, then click the Configure search button.
  3. Select Advanced.
  4. Click Add provider, select a provider from the dropdown menu, and specify a name.
    * To search across multiple sites, select each site from the Sites to include dropdown menu, and click Add site.
    * To use a Google Custom Search or Google Search Appliance, provide the URL of a search result page. Since the search term is replaced, you may simply search for "test" within your search appliance or custom search engine and use the resulting URL, resembling:
  5. Click OK to add the search provider.
    • If you want to make your new search provider the default search, follow these steps:
      • Navigate to the General tab.
      • From the By Default Search dropdown menu, select your new search provider.
  6. Click OK, then click Save Changes to save the search settings for the site.
  7. Click Return To Site to test the search box.

Post to Blogger via Email

How do I post via email?

The Mail-to-Blogger feature turns any email account into a blog-posting application. In Settings | Email you can create a Mail-to-Blogger address which you will use to send posts via email to your blog:

Settings | Email tab

To post to your blog via email, you need to configure your Mail-to-Blogger email address in Settings | Email:

The format of the email address is Note that this email address must be kept secret. Otherwise, anyone who gets it will be able to post as you.

Also be sure to specify whether or not you prefer your email posts to publish automatically. If this option is not checked, then your posts will be saved on your account but will not appear on your blog until you log in to and publish them yourself.

Once you have saved your Settings, you can send email to your blog. The subjects of your email letters will be the titles of your posts, and the body of the emails will be the posts themselves. To include an image in your post, you can attach an image to you your email.

  • Sometimes email programs append text to the bottom of each sent message; to make sure this cruft doesn't get posted to your blog, put #end at the end of your post.

BUT FOR: iTunes

Who is "Unknown Artist"? What is "Track 01"? Find out with Clean.

There's nothing more annoying than a music library littered with "Unknown Artists", "Track 01s", or the same artist labeled multiple different ways, i.e. "Led Zepplin vs. LEDZEPLIN vs. zePPlin". Clean is the must-have tool for anyone with missing or inaccurate tags in their music collection. TuneUp will automagically fill in missing metadata like artist, song name, album, release year and genre.
