User Interface Design: Flat vs. Skeuomorphism

Skeuomorphic design will trump flat in the long run.  It's naturally familiar for users of all ages.  Users don't want to think, so don't make them.

FLAT = 2 tone

from Microsoft Office 2010

Your mouse position has to be extremely exact.  It requires the user to really focus on where he or she is clicking.  Users don't want to think.  They want the computer to solve their problem in the easiest way possible.

SKEUOMORPHISM = design cues are taken from the physical world (i.e. 3D looking button or textures)

We've all seen this is real life.  We inherently know how to use it without any extra second of thinking.
